How the Area Took Shape
Twickenham is the original 1809 plat of Huntsville and the largest antebellum historic district in Alabama. Most of the surviving residences predate the Civil War, with a layer of late-Victorian and early-twentieth-century infill on the edges. The historic-district designation governs exterior changes, which is why the streetscape has held its character so consistently and why renovations here require a different planning horizon than elsewhere in the metro.
